Service Description
Most of us know, somewhere in the back of our minds, that the body is trying to tell us something. We just haven’t learned how to listen. Soma & Self is a slow yoga class built around one idea: that the body is not an obstacle to well-being. It’s the path to it. Each week, we move deliberately, breathe with intention, and explore one principle from the science of psychological well-being through the lived experience of the body. Not as a concept. As something you actually feel. Poses are held until they become something other than a shape. The breath does real work here, helping to calm the nervous system. Rest is long and taken seriously. And what gets woven through all of it are the things that actually seem to matter for a good life: the ability to be present, to be kind to yourself, to feel something without being swept away by it. Who is this class for? Anyone who wants more from a yoga practice Students navigating the pressure of school. People who feel disconnected from their bodies. People who have been curious about mindfulness but haven’t found a way in that actually clicks. People who have tried yoga before and found it too fast, too focused on performance, or just not quite right. You don’t need experience. You don’t need flexibility. You just need a willingness to show up and pay attention. Do I need to have done yoga before? No. This class is designed for all levels, including people who have never been on a mat. The pace is slow, options are always given, and there is no shape you are expected to achieve. If you can breathe, you can practice here. What’s the psychology piece? Is this therapy? It’s not therapy and it doesn’t replace it. The psychological side of this class draws from positive psychology, somatic psychology, and neuroscience. Each week has a theme from that research woven into the physical practice in plain, everyday language. Things like learning to notice what your body is actually feeling, building the ability to stay calm under pressure, or practicing being a little kinder to yourself. You’ll leave with both a felt sense of the practice and an understanding of why it works.
